In Waikiki: Queens Waikiki, Pa’ina Waikiki and Na Lei Aloha are walking distance from most hotels; Ka Moana at Aloha Tower is 10 to 15 minutes by car.
West side (Kapolei, Ko Olina): Mauka Warriors, Chief’s, Germaine’s and Kaula are 35 to 50 minutes away, longer in weekday rush hour. Most sell a Waikiki shuttle for about $30 to $39.
North Shore: Toa Luau (Waimea Valley) is about an hour’s drive with no shuttle; the Polynesian Cultural Center (Laie) sells a $28 motor coach.
East side: Aloha Kai at Sea Life Park is about 30 minutes past Diamond Head, with a $35.99 shuttle.
Most evening luaus check in between 4:30 and 5:30 PM and finish around 8:00 to 8:30 PM.
Toa Luau runs two seatings, 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM (the midday one is cheaper); it does not run every day, so check the calendar when you book.
Days vary: Mauka Warriors and Ka Moana run Sunday to Friday, Chief’s Sunday, Monday and Wednesday to Friday, Queens Waikiki Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The Polynesian Cultural Center is closed on Sundays.

Almost every first-time visitor to Oahu wants one luau night, and there
are about a dozen to choose from. They share a format but differ a lot in setting,
show, food and the drive. Here is how they compare, what they really cost, and the
questions to ask before you pay.
What a luau actually is
A luau is a Hawaiian feast: originally a celebration built around kalua pig
cooked all day in an imu, the underground oven, and named for the taro leaves
served with it. Today’s commercial luaus add a Polynesian revue: dances from
Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa and Aotearoa (New Zealand), told as a story and ending with
the Samoan fire knife dance. Around it come a lei greeting, a mai tai and an hour of
activities: lei making, coconut husking, hula lessons, games. The best luaus teach
you something about the islands along the way; the weaker ones are a buffet with a
stage.
Toa Luau tickets include Waimea Valley: the garden walk to the falls comes before the feast.
The price math, honestly
Official 2026 adult prices run from about $109 at Queens Waikiki Luau to $250 for
VIP seating at the top shows, with most mid-range packages between $130 and $200.
On top of that come tax (several luaus quote prices before tax), a Waikiki shuttle
of $28 to $39 for the out-of-town luaus, and tips. The Viator
prices on this page are usually a little higher than the luau’s cheapest
direct ticket, because they include booking fees and free cancellation up to 24
hours before; at Toa Luau and Chief’s Luau the Viator price and the official
evening price are the same. Booking direct can be cheaper, especially with the
luaus’ own promotions or a kama’aina (Hawaii resident) discount, and we

The one thing to check: which seating section your ticket
buys. At most luaus the tiers differ mainly in how close you sit to the stage, and
guest reviews are clear that the back rows see much less of the fire dancing.

by a world fire knife champion. No car and no shuttle: the

What happened to Paradise Cove
For 47 years Paradise Cove in Ko Olina was the luau most visitors had heard of.
It held its last show on 31 December 2025, and older guides and some listings still
mention it. The same stretch of west-side coastline now has Kaula Luau at
Ko Olina, which opened in February 2026; nearby Germaine’s Luau, open since
1976, still runs its classic beach luau in Kapolei.
Timing the night
Most evening luaus check in between 4:30 and 5:30 PM and finish around 8:00 to
8:30 PM, so the show lands just after sunset. Days vary by venue (no luau runs every night, and the
Polynesian Cultural Center is closed on Sundays), and summer and the
holidays fill up first. For the west-side luaus, allow for rush-hour traffic on the

Is Paradise Cove Luau still open?
No. Paradise Cove in Ko Olina held its last show on 31 December 2025 after 47 years. Old listings and articles may still appear online. The new Kaula Luau at Ko Olina (opened February 2026) is the nearest replacement, with the same sunset coastline.
Is a luau worth the money?
For a first trip to Hawaii, usually yes: you get dinner, drinks, a lei, cultural activities and a 60 to 90 minute Polynesian show in one evening. It is less worth it if you pick the wrong seats (the cheapest sections can be far from the stage) or a far-away luau without a plan for the drive. Read the honest price math before you choose.
How long does a luau usually last?
About 3 hours for an evening luau: roughly an hour of lei greeting and activities, an hour of dinner, then a 60 to 90 minute show. Add the drive: up to an hour each way to the North Shore or west-side luaus. The Polynesian Cultural Center package fills most of the day, from about 12:15 PM to 8:45 PM.
What should I wear to a luau?
Resort casual: an aloha shirt or light shirt with shorts or chinos, a sundress or skirt, and sandals. The luaus are outdoors, so bring a light layer for the evening breeze and bug spray. Black is fine. Leave heels at the hotel, since many venues are on grass. More in our what to wear guide.
Do you tip at a luau?
Gratuities are usually not included, so check your confirmation. A common guideline is about 10 percent for buffet luaus, 15 percent where there is table service, and about $1 per drink at the bar. Bring some cash; tips are often collected at the table.
Is there a free luau show in Waikiki?

Which luau is better, Ka Moana or Aloha Kai?
